California officer killed, another injured following early morning shootout

WHITTIER, Ca. — A California police officer is dead and another injured following a shootout Monday morning.

According to KTLA, it all started when the two officers responded to a crash around 8:30 a.m. in Whittier. The suspect had reportedly struck two other vehicles at a stoplight.

When officers arrived on the scene, one of the victims pointed the vehicle out to police who then approached the driver. It was during a pat down of the driver that he pulled out a semi-automatic weapon and began firing at the officers, CBS News reported.

They immediately returned fire, injuring the suspect.

The second officer and the suspect are said to be in stable condition.

The identities of those involved have not been released at this time. However, we do know the suspect is an alleged gang member who was driving a car reported stolen.
