PHILLIPS COUNTY, Ark. — Police are investigating two murders that happened within 24 hours.

Helena-West Helena Police said Robert Newman, 20, was shot five times outside his uncle’s home shortly after midnight Tuesday in the area of Lasalle Drive and Desoto Street.

He died after being airlifted to a Memphis hospital.

Witnesses told police they saw a green SUV, possibly a Yukon, leave the scene of the shooting. Police said they have a couple of persons of interest.

Later that day, authorities found a body inside a burned car just outside the city limits on a rural roadway.

Family members told WREG the body is that of an 18-year-old but Arkansas State Police have not confirmed that person’s identity.

Police haven’t said if the homicides could be connected.
