MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A baby is dead and a suspect in custody after a shooting at an apartment complex on South Mendenhall on Friday morning.

Family members say 1-year-old Robin Keefer died after she was critically injured in the shooting.

"She was a sweet baby," said her aunt, Wanda Keefer. "She was always smiling. Never cried too much unless she was hungry."

The child was shot in the 3500 block of South Mendenhall around 7:30 a.m. Friday and was rushed to Le Bonheur Children's Hospital in critical condition. Several squad cars escorted the ambulance, clearing motorists out of the way to help get the child into a doctor's care quickly.

Keefer said the baby's mother had given Robin a bath and had taken her into the living room to dry off when she heard a pop sound.

A potential suspect was detained by police around 1:30 Friday.

Keefer said the family did not know the suspect.
