MEMPHIS, Tenn. — New details have been released after an officer-involved shooting early Friday morning.
According to Colonel Keith Watson with the Memphis Police Department, officers were told to be on the lookout for a vehicle in the area of Lamar Avenue and Bellevue that had been stolen. Within 20 minutes officers spotted the vehicle at 1243 Lamar.
As officers approached, the male suspect drove towards the officer resulting in the officer firing a shot. The driver was not hit.
The driver of the vehicle then crashed the car into the side of a home at 1247 Lamar causing a gas leak. One resident who lives there told WREG's Melissa Moon he heard the impact and soon afterwards police knocked on their door telling them to evacuate quickly. Memphis Light, Gas and Water employees made the scene to turn off the gas.
Police said the 17-year-old suspect took off runningbut was quickly detained by officers.
This incident is still being investigated.
WREG was initially told by police that someone fired shots at the officers. That information appears to be incorrect.
