Several Mississippi school districts to close early Thursday due to weather

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Several Mississippi school districts have started announcing they will be closing early due to the threat of severe weather.

Reginald Milan was relieved South Panola County Schools were dismissing early. His son attends Batesville Intermediate School. "I was on Facebook and they announced it. I told my wife, we was just chillin out, and I told her 'we got to get up and we got to go get the kid."

One thing Mississippi doesn't need is more rainfall. So first thing Thursday crews checked off road vehicles and rescue boats to make sure that if the weather turned bad they were ready.

"The worst of the weather is supposed to stay south of us. But we are constantly monitoring it for changes, staying prepared and ready to respond where needed," Daniel Cole, Director of Panola County Emergency Operations, said.

The South Panola School District told WREG they will be closing Thursday at 1 p.m.

Lafayette County Schools said they will be closing several minutes later at 1:15 p.m.

Coahoma School District will close at 1:30 p.m.

Tate County Schools will also be closing at 1:30 p.m.

North Tippah School District will release students at 2 p.m.

North Mississippi Community College will close all campuses at 3 p.m. and cancel all evening and night classes.

WREG will update this story as more closings are announced.
