State: 600 Shelby County kindergartners have no record of vaccinations

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The Tennessee Department of Health says more than 600 hundred kindergartners enrolled in Shelby County Schools last year without records showing they were fully vaccinated.

The state agency says those children also didn’t have either of the religious or medical waivers allowing attendance without a full set of immunizations. Of the nearly 8,900 children in county schools in January 2018, 503 had incomplete records and 124 didn’t have any records at all.

The district director of exceptional children and health services, Shawn Page, says records can show as incomplete for a variety of reasons, including forms being from another state. District officials say the data has prompted it to hire at least four compliance officers.
