MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Memphis police are searching for a killer after a man was shot to death at a motel Thursday night in the Airport Area – the latest in a string of violent crimes there recently.
Investigators say a 22-year-old man was found shot to death around 10:30 p.m. in a room at the Fairview Inn and Suites on American Way. It’s the second deadly shooting in the area in as many days.
“It’s shocking and it’s just upsetting,” said Bert Smith, who waits at the MATA bus terminal next door during the overnight hours every day. “It’s too much crime, too much stuff goin’ on. People need to find something else better to do,” he said.
Thursday, a man and woman were found shot to death in a car three miles away at Dwight and Imogene.
So far, police haven’t arrested anyone in that shooting.
And just last month, on December 10, Jeremy Robinson was shot and killed at the Garden Inn, just over a mile down American Way.
Surveillance video led police to Travis Haynes, who’s now charged with first-degree murder in that case.
For people like Williams, ending up in the wrong place at the wrong time, staring down the barrel of a gun, is a very real fear.
“All the time, all the time. No matter where you’re at, it’s Memphis. Welcome to Memphis, pretty much,” he said. “I stay alert and watch my surroundings at all times. Just very alert – have to be.”
As detectives searched for clues overnight in this latest killing, they focused on a first-floor motel room.
Investigators tell WREG they are looking through video surveillance from the scene and other evidence, hoping it will lead them in the right direction.
Police still haven't released the victim's name, and are asking for help finding his killer. They have no suspect description.
