Woman shot dead during argument in Whitehaven

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A woman critically injured in a Whitehaven shooting has died.

The incident happened Monday night just before 8 p.m. on Stacey Road near Fairley High School.

The victim's identity has not been released, but police believe the suspect and victim knew each other.

Police said they have a man detained in connection to the incident.

Chris Baker, who said the young woman who died rented her home from him, said it started with an argument over a vehicle.

"Supposedly it was about a vehicle. We're not sure about the details yet but it was a heated discussion," Baker said.

He says she was at her home when one of her relatives and another man started arguing. Baker doesn't believe she was the intended target.

Tuesday, Baker was cleaning up the property. He said children are normally at the home, but they weren't home during the gunfight.

He calls the situation heartbreaking, saying the young woman, who he believes was in her early 20s, was always nice and respectful.

"They was quiet, hard workers," Baker said. "I have never had a problem with them with the house before. They always paid rent on time."
