JACKSON, Miss. (AP) — Mississippi is banning oversized and overweight commercial vehicles on its state and federal highways for part of the holidays.

The Mississippi Department of Transportation says the prohibition is in place Monday through Wednesday of Christmas week and again Dec. 31 through Jan. 2.

The department’s executive director, Melinda McGrath, says the temporary ban on big loads is intended to ease traffic and improve safety for travelers.
