Deputy dies on duty at Shelby County Jail

Ephraim Holmes

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The Shelby County Sheriff’s Office said a jailer collapsed while working at the county jail Saturday and later died.

Lt. Ephraim Holmes collapsed on the fourth floor of 201 Poplar while on duty around 2 p.m. He was taken to Methodist Hospital, where he later died.

Holmes was a 29-year-veteran at SCSO and is survived by three children.

“Lt. Holmes was a dedicated professional; for the last 29 years he was committed to protecting the citizens of Memphis and Shelby County. As an agency, we are hurting, but I can only imagine the pain that the family of Lt. Holmes is experiencing during this trying time,” Sheriff Floyd Bonner Jr. said in a statement.
