Police: Woman attacked after taking too long to get ready for church

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A normal afternoon in a Westwood home turned violent Saturday.

Police say Kevin Pugues and his wife started arguing because she was taking too long to get ready for church. Investigators say he pushed her. So, she hit him in the head out of fear. That's when Pugues allegedly shoved her onto the couch, smacked her, and chocked her until she almost passed out.

We talked with Pugues' mom.

"I feel that my baby does have some problems," she says, "He's not a bad person at all. He just has some mental issues."

She says her son is bipolar and suffers from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder because of his time in the military. He served for a couple years in South Korea and just got out this summer.

"Things that he does, the aggressive moves and bad swing moods. He needs some help and just putting him in jail that's not going to help him," his mom says.

She says he needs to take medication but doesn't know if he actually does. As for his wife, she was eventually able to get away and call police. Pugues' mom doesn't know how badly she was hurt.

According to an arrest affidavit, Pugues admitted to everything and told police that he and his wife fight a lot.

"They argue. They do," his mom says.

She says they've been married for a few years and have four young kids.

Pugues is charged with aggravated assault. His mom isn't sure what this incident will do to his marriage.

"We just pray about it," she says.

Pugues made an initial appearance in court today. He's due in court again tomorrow.
