Tigers add veteran assistant to basketball staff

MEMPHIS, Tenn-Memphis has added Butch Pierre to its men’s basketball staff as an assistant coach.

Pierre was an assistant head coach at North Carolina State last season. He previously spent eight seasons on Oklahoma State’s staff and 11 seasons at LSU. He earned the title associate head coach at both schools.

He also has worked as an assistant at Louisiana-Lafayette (1989-96) and Charlotte (1996-97).

Memphis coach Tubby Smith said in a statement announcing the hire that “he is someone that I have known of for many years, having coached against him at almost every one of his stops.”

Smith added that Pierre “has a deep knowledge of how major basketball programs are run and will be able to add a lot to our program.”
