MEMPHIS, Tenn. --Tiffany Phillips has known the man working the counter at the Boost Mobile on Winchester near Millbranch long enough to give him her own nickname.

"You just say Fatboy. 'What's up Fatboy?' He be, like, 'Oh, what's up?'"

But nothing could prepare Phillips to hear what happened Monday evening.

"They was like, 'Your Boost friend shot.'"

The same friend she had just spoken to just hours earlier, shot at least three times, a witness said, as he was standing outside the store just after 6 p.m.

According to police, three males walked up to him, shot him and then fled the scene.

The victim was rushed to the Regional Medical Center where he later died.

Three people are being detained.

"I come and talk to him every day. He`s like a cool guy. Should nobody did this to him."

WREG was there as dozens of police cars combed the area for clues. Several people were taken downtown for questioning.
