MARSHALL COUNTY, Miss. — A church in Marshall County has burned down 10 days before Christmas.

It happened at Barton United Methodist Church on Highway 309 near Highway 302.

Pastor Michael John Pope said no one was injured.

He said he got a call about the fire just before 6 p.m.

He thanked the local Mississippi church community for their support on a difficult night.

"We just have to take it step by step," Pope said. "The people here tonight - pastors and community folks - have been so gracious so kind. They’ve opened their churches to us, say, 'What can we do to help you guys at Barton United Methodist Church?' It’s a very close community and they’ve rallied around us tonight and it means a lot."

He asked people to pray for him and his congregants.

He said fire officials were investigating the cause and did not give him any update.

Pope said Sunday and Christmas worship services would be held at Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church on 8 Methodist St. in Mt Pleasant at the following times:

  • Sunday: 9:45 a.m.
  • Christmas Eve: 3 p.m.
  • Christmas Day: 9:45 a.m.
