MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- Authorities announced a woman would not face charges for shooting and killing the father of her children Friday night.

It happened Friday night around 8:30 on Parkchester Avenue in Parkway Village.

Memphis Police said a man went to his children's mother's home to visit his kids.

He got in a fight with their mother and started choking their aunt, police said.

They said that’s when the children’s mother shot him in self-defense.

The man died at the hospital.

“If it was me I would’ve done the same thing," neighbor Elizabeth Barrett said.

Authorities said the district attorney reviewed evidence and decided not to file charges.

The family involved did not want to comment.

“They are friendly. Nothing like this has ever happened before,” one neighbor said.

“We're very worried about this because we never see that happen in this neighborhood," another neighbor said.

They said they understood what happened might’ve been necessary, but they were still on edge.

Police said the aunt was treated and released from the hospital.
