GATLINBURG, Tenn. -- A Memphis couple last seen by their family trying to escape a wildfire while vacationing in East Tennessee have been found dead.

The family received a call from the Sevier County Sheriff's Department late Thursday afternoon that the bodies of Jon and Janet Summers have been found.

The couple is from Memphis.

The news came just hours after the family reported that all three of the couple's sons, Branson, Jared and Wesley Summers, were all improving.

WREG's Bridge Chapman was told the family was trying to escape when a tree on fire fell in the road, blocking their path.

“The children basically walked through, ran through a wall of fire to get to where they were and were taken to the hospital,” said Jim Summers.

Somehow Jon and Janet went one way while the three brothers went the other, all fighting through thick smoke and destruction.
