MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- A woman's in custody after police say she shot a man in Southeast Memphis on Tuesday, sending him to the hospital in critical condition.

Markeith Wilson said he immediately left work after hearing there was a shooting where his son was.

"I was praying the whole way over here that everything was okay," he said.

He said he left his five-year-old with family on Thistle Down Cove while he went to work, but a phone call cut that work day short. His aunt told him shots were fired right next door to her place.

"It could've went through the wall and hit him," said Wilson. "I could've lost a son, that's why I quickly left work and came and got him."

Police said the call came in around 10:30 Tuesday morning.

Neighbors told WREG's Bridget Chapman they heard two gunshots coming from the victim's apartment.

Wilson said his aunt and her boyfriend reacted quickly in regards to his son.

“He put my son in a room to make sure he was safe and he came and peeped out the window to make sure everything was okay.”

Police said a woman shot a man. Neighbors believe the two were dating and had some type of altercation. The victim was rushed to the hospital in critical condition, while neighbors told us they watched the suspect get arrested out front.

A car was towed after police wrapped up the scene Tuesday afternoon.

Tenants told WREG this wasn't the first report of gunshots in the complex.

“It's quiet," said Wilson. "Neighbors are friendly but in this back area, it's crazy.”

Wilson said he’s just happy his son’s safe.

“If anything happened to him, I would've been devastated.”

He hopes everyone else involved will be okay too.

WREG reached out to Memphis police to get an update on the victim’s condition and more information, but we have not heard back yet.
