Man caught on video convicted in liquor store killing

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Ernest Butler, 40, was automatically sentenced to life in prison for the death of Ken Smith, 56, on July 19, 2014, at the Beverage Center at 4626 Winchester in the Parkway Village area.

The shooting was captured on video surveillance cameras that showed Butler leaning over the counter trying to grab Smith by the wrist and then fired two shots at store owner who pulled away and out of the camera’s view.

Butler has multiple prior convictions, including possession of a handgun.

He could receive an additional 15 years when he is sentenced by Judge Lee Coffee next month.
