Off-duty firefighter killed in car accident on Walnut Grove

MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- A member of the Shelby County Fire Department has died.

WREG has learned 26-year-old Ryon McCray was killed in a car accident near Walnut Grove and Houston Levee early Sunday morning.

He was off-duty at the time.

McCray joined the fire department in 2013.

The SCFD released the following statement:

It is with profound sadness that Shelby County Fire Chief Alvin D. Benson and the Administrative Staff of the Shelby County Fire Department impart the news of the death of one of our Fire Fighters.

This morning as the result of a one - vehicle collision on Walnut Grove Rd near Houston Levee, SCFD Fire Fighter Ryon McCray lost his life from injuries sustained in the crash. He was 26 years old and off duty at the time. He leaves behind his devoted Mother and Father.

Fire Fighter McCray had joined the Shelby County Fire Department in 2013 and was assigned to Fire Engine Company No. 64 on Navy Rd. as a Fire Fighter / A.E.M.T.

Details of the incident are not available at this time and the investigation into the cause of the crash is being conducted by the Office of the Shelby County Sheriff.

There will be no further statements available today as his immediate family along with his fire fighting family pause to grieve his loss.
