MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- Veteran sports journalist George Lapides passed away this morning at the age of 76 after a long battle with a lung disease called idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis.

George started his career as a news reporter for the Memphis Press-Scimitar in the mid-1960s.

He later became that newspaper's Sports Editor/Columnist and held those jobs until the Press-Scimitar closed its doors in 1983.

In 1971, George began hosting a daily sports talk show on radio that lasted 45 years.

George spent ten years working as the Sports Editor at WREG from 1995-2005.

George wore many hats during a colorful career.

He was the athletic director at Rhodes in 1984 before taking over the Memphis Chicks minor league baseball team in the mid-1980s.

WREG will have funeral plans for Mr. Lapides once they are finalized.
