16-year-old killed during attempted robbery in East Memphis

MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- A driver is recovering at the hospital after being shot in his side by attempted robbers.

one of those suspects, a 16-year-old, is dead following Wednesday morning`s shootout in this East Memphis neighborhood.

"Just pow pow pow, back to back to back."

Gunfire woke up Tony Harmon, but he stayed inside his home on Denison as officers shut down the street looking for clues.

Detectives told WREG the man and a woman were sitting in a car in front of a home when three armed suspects approached them.

"Shots were fired in the car," said Major Rodney Adair.

But the victim fired back in self-defense hitting the teenager.

Police said the suspects took off from the scene in hoodies and a dark colored car.

"The victims were pretty much scrambling for their lives. so they didn't get a good look at them."

But a short time later, police found that teen suspect at the hospital.

He was first taken to Delta Medical, but then airlifted to the Regional Medical Center where he died.

"I`m sorry to hear that. I don`t know why he would put himself in that position."

News of the overnight crime turned tragedy shook neighbors like Tony Harmon.

"It makes me keep my guard up even more, when I was already relaxed."

Harmon is saddened a teenage boy lost his life, but also for the gun owner.

"Would you have done the same? To protect myself I would have and worried about the consequences later."
