Bartlett woman charged with identity theft, stealing $362K from employer

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A former secretary is behind bars after she allegedly embezzled more than $362,000 from her employer, a Memphis attorney.

Teresa Sumpter, 48, worked as a secretary for attorney Jerry Schatz from July 2013 to September 2015, according to the affidavit. She is accused of stealing checks from Schatz’s trust account and forging her signature on them as well as opening three credit cards in his name and listing herself as an authorized user.

Sumpter purchased several vehicles using the stolen checks and also used money from the accounts to pay for her own bills and personal items, according to the affidavit.

She was arrested Sunday and is charged with two counts of forgery, six counts of identity theft and two counts of theft of property $60,000 or more.
