DYERSBURG, Tenn. --Thursday, employees at Sun Products had little to say about the company closing its Dyersburg location.

"I hate it but I guess we'll all have to move on," said one employee.

Most workers were headed to lunch and drove by quickly, but those that did stop said the news caught them completely off guard.

" How long have you worked here?" WREG asked one worker.

"Four years. Yeah, four years," the employee replied.

"How did you find out?"

"Through a meeting."

"Are you upset?"

"A little bit, but it'll be alright."

It turns out the closing was just as much of a surprise to economic leaders in Dyer County.

"There was no indication from the company that this was imminent," said Allen Hester, President and CEO of the Chamber of Commerce.

He said he found out after Sun employees went online.

"Some of them posted on Facebook. So we began to notice things coming up on social media and then we confirmed it yesterday with the company," he said.

The Dyersburg plant, originally owned by Clorox, was built in 1988.

Sun Products, which manufacturs powdered laundry detergent, acquired the plant in 2008.

The closing comes as a result of consumers switching to liquid and detergent pods.

The company plans to focus on its other locations.

Hester admitted the closing will have some negative economic impacts on the community.

"Even though it only represents about for percent of our total number of manufacturing jobs, it's still a hundred and seventy five families that will be without work a week before Christmas."
