MEMPHIS,Tenn. -- An attempted kidnapping at the Kroger on Germantown Parkway and Dexter in Cordova left shoppers on edge Wednesday.

Police say a female employee was nearly abducted while picking up stray shopping carts Tuesday night.

Kroger officials released this statement saying, "The safety of our associates is very important to us. We are working with the Memphis Police Department during this ongoing investigation."

The victim says she was doing her daily duties. Retrieving the carts just before 9pm Tuesday when a man tried to abduct her in the middle of a Kroger parking lot.

Janey Patterson says she always brings her mace when she goes to shopping centers. She knows they tend to draw criminals.

"They look for people who are easy targets. Older people, young people who are texting, not really paying attention to what they are doing," Patterson explained.

She questions the Kroger managers letting a woman out that late to get the carts in the first place. She says she wouldn't want her daughters out there, alone.

"I'd be really uneasy about it," she explained.

While our cameras were out there Wednesday we didn't see any police cruisers, and there's no word if security cameras were able to get a license plate on the black sedan he was driving.

Some shoppers wonder if this would have happened if there was a stronger security presence.

Doderidge Shepherd said, "I think it's Kroger's job. It's on their property."

Shepherd says they shouldn't rely on police, others say it should be a team effort to keep everyone safe.

Carl Benson added, "I mean they are normally pretty good about security around here."

In the mean time shoppers like Janey Patterson say this reminds them to stay aware during routine trips like here to the grocery store.

This is an ongoing investigation.
