MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- A carjacking suspect made a bold move, trying to carjack a woman in broad daylight outside two bail bonding businesses and very close to the Shelby County Jail.

A woman was sitting in her car with a friend when a man tried to take it.

Kavin Carter says even for Memphis, the crime is outrageous.

“It shows you where as crime has no limitation,” he said.

“I think it's ironic that we're not even two blocks down from the jail,” said William Winters.

It happened right outside two bail bonding companies on Poplar.

Police say Brian Jones reached into a woman's car yesterday, hit her in the face, and tried to pull her out of it. When she kicked him out, police say he went to the passenger’s side, but that woman had already locked the door.

“It shows you how deep it really is. You're downtown, one minute away from 201 Poplar, and the crime is going on,” Carter said.

Right now, nobody knows why Jones tried to steal the car, but it shows crime happens everywhere, even feet away from the criminal justice center.

“Desperate people do desperate things so I`m not making that wrong be right in your carjacking a crime, but it's a larger problem that people are going to have to address,” Carter said.
