(Clayton, GA) A student’s tongue-in-cheek yearbook quote is threatening to ruin her senior year.

Paris Gray is a senior class vice president, a member of SADD, the Beta Club, and a leader on campus.

All that may not matter when it comes to whether she gets to graduate next week.

In her area of the yearbook, Gray used elements from the periodic chart to spell out, “To back that a** up.”

The message was: “When the going gets tough just remember to Barium, Carbon, Potassium, Thorium, Astatine, Arsenic, Sulfur, Uranium, Phosphorus.”

“I think their reaction was beyond what it should have been because nobody understood it,” said Paris Gray told WSB-TV.

An in-school suspension was issued that kept from participating in a senior walk.

“My first reaction was, you are such a nerd,” said Gray’s mother Zarinah Woods.

Administrators were not pleased.

Paris is supposed to give the inspirational speech at the graduation ceremony, but she said she was told that will not happen.

“It just completely destroyed me, and my mom’s been telling me don’t let it ruin my happiness but it’s like really taking a big toll,” Gray to WSB-TV.

A school district spokesperson said no decision has been made yet about graduation.

Is this serious? Does no one in public education have a sense of humor any more? You ought to see some of the things in my senior yearbook and I graduated in 1972 from White Station. I think the person responsible ended up being a minister. Let the girl graduate – maybe it wasn’t in the best taste but it is just harmless senior fun.

my lord in heaven the periodc table, what class. I was not at all a wiz at chemistry. Now how about this lady, I give all the credit in the world to using the peridoic chart, way to go dudess.

Oh get with the times and stop beating our children down. This girl is smart and creative along with really never writing anything bad. Just because you read into it and think it’s a bad saying doesn’t mean someone else does. Why don’t they ask her what her definition of the phrase is? Why don’t you put a hault on the music industry. I think everyone who is upset is just to slow to figure it out them selves. Then again no one can see the creativity and humor. I would pat my girl on the back if she came up with that. How do you know the “proof reader” didn’t know it was there? They might have and thought it was genious too. Then again our society today is so sensative it’s scary. Maybe we should all live in a box or better yet ancave since we’re scared of the sun.

when life gets hard back that a** up……when you’re going through rough times sit back and think what you could have done differently to change the issue and move on……very smart young lady as long as you get that diploma the hell with the school.

EXACTLY! I believe that’s all she was saying but in a hip way using the periodic table. People have skipped all over the message and making her a vilian because of their inability to see it positive. The school knows who this girl is and they know she meant well. They’re mad because they didn’t do their job and now the world knows it. What doesn’t kill you baby should make you strong.

The dumb-a## administrators need to go after the yearbook editors, not the student. What idiots.
