(Memphis) Police are searching for a man who brutally attacked and raped a woman in South Memphis.

It happened on Saturday in the 1300 block of Willie Mitchell in an abandoned, wooded lot.

Neighbors said they heard her screams and called police.

Officers responded at about 4:20 a.m., and said a 34-year-old woman was sexually assaulted and injured so badly, she couldn't speak. She was transported to Regional Medical Center in critical condition.

As of Monday night, police said she is improving.

Neighbors said the victim is a nice woman who just moved to the area with her mom several months ago.

"We just waved and spoke to each other. That's it," said her next door neighbor who wanted to keep her identity hidden for safety reasons.

WREG is told the victim's mother hasn't been home since it happened. She's at her daughter's bedside.

Officers said they spotted the suspect near the scene shortly after it happened. He got away, and police have a vague description of who he is.

The suspect is described as a young black man, 5'10" and 180 lbs., with a slim build. He was wearing dark clothing.
