Alabama Student Killed While Protecting Girlfriend

(Tuscaloosa, AL) A University of Alabama student was killed during a tornado while trying to protect his girlfriend.

John Servati, 21, a junior swimmer from Tupelo died Monday.

Servati had been in the basement of a home on 22nd Avenue in Tuscaloosa and was hit by a retaining wall in his basement while taking cover.

“John Servati was an extraordinary young man of great character and warmth who had a tremendously giving spirit,” UA coach Dennis Pursley said in a statement. “During this incredibly difficult time, our thoughts and prayers go out to his family and to all who had the good fortune to know him. He will forever be in our hearts and a part of the Crimson Tide legacy.”

The same day he died, Servati’s hometown of Tupelo was also hit by a tornado and one death has been confirmed.
