(Memphis) The average airfare at Memphis International Airport has dropped over the past two years, according to data released by the U.S. Department of Transportation.

The statistics show average domestic airfare for the fourth quarter of 2013 for the top 100 airports.

In 2011, the average ticket price at MEM was $499.32. In 2012, it was $487.11. By 2013, it was $434.43.

“This is very encouraging news for our passengers,” Scott Brockman, president and CEO of the Memphis-Shelby County Airport Authority, said. “The addition of low-cost carrier Southwest Airlines and enhanced competition among other carriers has had a positive impact on fares.”

“We still have work to do, but we are trending in the right direction,” he added.

The departure of Delta changed MEM from a heavy transfer airport to a predominately “origin and destination” airport.

Officials say, compared to fiscal year 2013, origin and destination passengers have increased by nearly 65,000 thanks to the lower airfare.
