Memphis, TN-Tigers freshman point guard Pookie Powell has decided not to transfer and agreed to return to Memphis for summer school as requested by his coach, Josh Pastner.

That news comes after Tigers assistant coach Robert Kirby was dispatched to Orlando on Wednesday to visit with Powell’s family that had wanted Pookie to workout in California for the summer with former Tigers strength coach Frank Matrisciano.

Powell, a 5-11 freshman, who was a top 100 recruit out of high school, is expected to compete for the starting point guard job after having to sit out this season because of academics.

At least he didn’t accept money like Austin Nichols to stay home and play for U of M. It’s an open secret that Austin accepted $20,000 to stay home.
