(WREG-TV) The National Civil Rights Museum (NCRM) will host the Drop the Mic Poetry Slam competition Saturday.
The event is one of several that will celebrate the Museum’s grand reopening.
Drop the Mic is an opportunity for youth and young adults between ages 15-25 to articulate their views on freedom, through their own lens – what does freedom mean in the present tense, to this generation?
Poets will perform original pieces following the theme “My Freedom Is.”
Celebrity judges are Danny Simmons, co-producer of Def Poetry Jam, along with Memphis natives Aisha Raison and multi-platinum hit-maker Drumma Boy.
Two grand prize winners, one in each category, will win a $1,000 cash prize, a museum membership and the opportunity to perform their piece on the main stage at the Museum’s grand reopening on April 5, 2014.
The second and third place winners in each category will win $750 and $500, respectively.
