(Memphis) The Memphis Police Department is searching for two people who followed an East Memphis man to his gated neighborhood and brutally beat him.

Officers say Dr. Burton Bodan put in his code for the gate, and then those two suspects followed him right in.

Neighbors can't believe the 85-year-old was robbed and beaten in his driveway around dinner-time last week.

The elderly doctor actively practices optometry, and has for more than 50 years.

He currently practices at Ultra Optics.

“I think it's mean and vicious. Mean and vicious because they know they can overpower him,” said one neighbor who didn’t want to be identified over safety concerns.

According to police, two people, much younger than Bodan, jumped him as he pulled into the garage and demanded money.

When he told them he didn't have any, they roughed him up so much he was hospitalized.

They took his credit cards and $300.

He was treated for critical injuries.

“My husband he was sleeping the house and he heard someone screaming,” said Dr. Bodan’s neighbor, Cindy Lin.

“He's very nice. We use to help each other,” said Lin.

Helpful seems to be the way many friends describe Dr. Bodan.

“He's a very friendly man,” said Bodan’s neighbor, Don Stark.

Stark says their neighborhood is meeting tonight to talk about putting up a camera and more lights at the gate.

If you have any information about the people who may have done this, call Crime Stoppers at 901-528-CASH.
