(Nashville, TN)  The Tennessee House of Representatives sub-committee on education has passed a bill that would allow cities to form their own school systems.

House Bill 1288, sponsored by Shelby County Representative Curry Todd, could pave the way for local municipalities to form their own school systems, after Memphis dissolved its school charter, effectively merging with Shelby County Schools.

The bill will now proceed to the full house for a vote.

A federal judge previously struck down a similar law, stating it was specific to certain areas of the state.  The new law allows for statewide formation of new school districts.
