(Southaven, MS) Right now, Southaven police say they have the only gun range in DeSoto County.

Problem is, only law enforcement can use it at a time when there’s more demand than ever for weapons training.

Just ask the people who buy and sell guns.

They say there’s just nowhere close to practice.

”Well, right now, it’s either go way up to Memphis or Como, and you’ve gotta be a member to shoot in Como and that’s 45 minutes from here,” said Justin Dabbs of Dabbs Gun & Pawn.

But now, some prospective business owners have applied to the City of Southaven to open a gun range in the old 84 lumber building behind the Old K-Mart on Stateline road.

Word of the new gun range comes as Mississippi’s enhanced weapons permits are more popular than ever.

Police officers who teach the classes tell us they make more teaching the classes than they do in their regular jobs.

Southaven seems to be welcoming the new business with open arms.

Folks at City Hall say they’ve had lots of positive comments.

”Initially it’s going to be an indoor gun range and training classes, I think eventually they want to be addition for rifle shooting, archery stuff on the outside, so expansion is a definite possibility,” said Southaven Planning Director Whitney Choat-Cook.

City leaders say the gun range still has to get approval from the planning board and Aldermen, but so far there’s ample support for a safe place to learn firearms safety.

”The whole goal is to protect yourself, know how to protect yourself and be safe with a firearm,” said Dabbs.

Gun range owners hope to be open for business by the summer.
