(Memphis) A popular grocery store and deli next to LeMoyne-Owen College was destroyed by fire early Wednesday morning.

The building on Walker in South Memphis also housed some apartments, but everyone made it out safely.

Climmie Lester has owned Lester's Grocery and Deli for 24 years. He says the building itself is about 75 years old.

Lester says over the years he has hired quite a few LeMoyne-Owen students and says many students come there daily, "Every day, yeah. I know they are going to be devastated. The are going to be in worst shape than I am when they get here."

Lester hasn't decided if he will rebuild, but says it will be hard to replace that kind of history.

Firefighters don't know where the fire started and say because of the damage they may never know the cause.

Four people were living in apartments above the store. Fire officials say all of the apartments had working smoke detectors.
