(Memphis) A new hotel coming to Memphis could bring a much needed boost to one of the city’s busiest tourist areas.

The city just approved the building of a new Holiday Inn Select for Whitehaven.

The new hotel is expected to mean a lot to not only tourists, but also those who live and work in the Memphis neighborhood.

The Holiday Inn Express will stand four stories tall and have 87 rooms and suites.

It will have the conveniences of modern hotels.

That is something Australian visitor Marilyn Watson says some hotels near Graceland lack.

This time around she’s staying at a hotel downtown,  “When I came the last time, we didn't have the internet. Now, you can get so much off the internet."

The new hotel will be built on a vacant plot of land at Old Hernando Rd. and Elvis Presley Blvd.

The construction is expected to start this spring and will take 8 months to complete.

Now, the area doesn’t look like much.

It needs a face lift like other parts of the street.

Memphis City Councilman Harold Collins said, “We as a community realize that's not our best foot forward.”

Collins is leading the charge to help renovate Whitehaven.

He says the hotel will do wonders to improve the look of the area and he’s quick to point out even though citizens of Memphis won’t be staying there, they will definitely benefit.

“We know there will be full-time jobs, sustainable full-time jobs, in this hotel as well as construction jobs in the meantime,” said Collins.

Collins says DeSoto County hotels get a lot of Graceland tourists.

He says with this hotel at least some of those dollars will be staying in Memphis.
