(Memphis) - Police spent most of Wednesday afternoon combing a home in the 900 block of Estridge Drive in Berclair. They were searching  for clues inside the house where police say a 16-year-old shot his stepfather.

"I know there was somewhat of a dispute between them, but I didn’t know that it would resort to him shooting him in the face that’s messed up,” neighbor Eli Wise said.

Wise lives across the street from the victim who he told us is Steve Houston, a former marine in his fifties.

“I did not hear any gunshot I think it happened inside,” he said.

Wise believes Houston's stepson suffered from some form of mental illness.

"You can tell something’s off about him and I’m the only one he'd only talk to socially,” he said.

“When I stepped outside I saw them putting the kid in the cop car,” neighbor Daniel Westpy said.

The 16-year-old was placed in police custody, but so far no charges have been filed.

Meanwhile, his stepfather remains in critical condition at the Regional Medical Center.

"He’s a nice person from what I knew,” Westpy said.

Those who knew him are praying for his recovery, and for answers as to what lead the teen to pull the trigger.
