Boise, ID-Football power Boise State announced on Monday it will stay put in the Mountain West Conference and not join the Big East in 2013.

In a press release from the school, Boise State president Robert Kustra said, “The benefits of geographic footprint, revenue, and national exposure have to be balanced against the changing circumstances of conference realignment. I am confident that our Mountain West membership is the very best decision for Boise State University, our student-athletes and our incredible fan base.”

The Broncos still have to pay a $10-million exit fee. The Mountain West is expected to help Boise State pay it. The University of Memphis was scheduled to play at Boise State next year.

Boise State’s exit means another newcomer to the Big East, San Diego State, can decide not to join and be free of paying an exit fee because of wording in its contract with the Big East.
