(Memphis) A bigger, better Beale Street is in the works now that the City of Memphis officially has control of it.

Mayor A C Wharton made that announcement after a judge gave control of the famous entertainment district to the city.

The ruling was part of the bankruptcy case involving Performa Entertainment, which ran Beale Street for 30 years.

“We can get about maintaining Beale Street as the premier entertainment place in the world, quite frankly when it comes to talking about the blues,” said Mayor Wharton.

Wharton said he wants to expand Beale Street itself and bring in more entertainment.
