(Memphis)  The U.S. Postal Service announced plans Thursday to raise prices, starting in January.

The cost of a first class stamp will go up a penny — to 46 cents. Postcard postage will also go up by one cent — to 33 cents. Price hikes are also planned for Priority Mail services.

The Postal Service also announced plans to create a global forever stamp, similar to the forever stamp used domestically. It will cost $1.10 and can be used to send letters anywhere in the world.

The rate increases will go into effect on January 27, 2013, if the Postal Regulatory Commission approves the changes.
