(Memphis) City leaders are hoping a lighted landmark will serve as a symbol to encourage domestic violence victims to break their silence.

Monday night, the Liberty Bowl was illuminated in purple.

Memphis Mayor A C Wharton hopes to prove that those who commit domestic violence will be prosecuted.

“There is no place of comfort for you. You’re simply not going to be tolerated here,” said Wharton. “And again, you just never know, this light or billboard might catch someone’s attention.”

Leaders are asking people to show their support by putting up purple lights outside their homes and businesses.
