(Memphis) - A 4-year-old Memphis boy is dead and police are trying to figure out who killed him.

Police say last Tuesday the child was playing outside of his home on Pamela Street in Frayser.

The child's father told police another child had come up to play with his son in the yard, then he saw the child hit his son on the head with a stick.

The child was taken to the hospital where he went into a coma.

He died September 11th.

When Teresa Farmer heard from homicide investigators that her neighbor's 4-year-old son was killed on her street she couldn't believe it.

"I said a homicide? They said a baby died. My heart just dropped," she said.

She and other neighbors are skeptical about the story police were told.

"I ain't buying that story," she said. "Somebody's lying somebody and needs to tell the truth."The only people I have seen go down this street and go to that house are grown folks."

Hattie Carrick also lives by the family. She says the family hadn't lived in the neighborhood that long.

"You just don't know what to believe these days," Carrick said.  "I never did think that would happen in my community. It never happened before but I guess it can."

While police try to figure out what happened to the child, neighbors pray for justice.

Homicide investigators are currently in charge of this investigation.
