Power restored, fire out after massive blaze at South Memphis pallet lot

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Firefighters have contained a massive fire at the HD Pallet Company on the 2900 block of South Third after several wooden pallets began burning on an outdoor lot around 4:20 p.m.

No one was injured, but the fire burned for about 45 minutes sending up a big cloud of black smoke visible for miles.

Charles Jiles said the fire was small when he first saw it, but soon grew, getting dangerously close to the nearby It's All Good car lot.

"Just a small little flame at first like maybe 10, 15 pallets. Then all of a sudden, it just burst into flames," Jiles said.

Hundreds of MLGW customers were temporarily without power after flames licked several utility poles.

A large section of South Third from Brooks to Peebles was blocked to traffic for several hours as more than 80 first responders arrived to do battle with the blaze.

"It took some time because of the combustible material that was involved. We raised three of our aerial ladders," said Lt. Wayne Cooke with the Memphis Fire Department.

The Memphis Fire Department said the HD Pallet Company building was unaffected and no one was injured.

MFD said the cause of the fire is still under investigation.
