MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- A pickup truck crashed into a Whitehaven home Thursday morning, pinning a man against a table and breaking his leg.
It happened around 11:15 a.m. in the 1900 block of Danberry Avenue.
Witnesses say the homeowner was sitting on his couch watching TV, when the truck came barreling into his living room.
"He was on the couch and the couch is under the truck," said Kevin Carter, the driver's son.
He says his 74-year-old mother – who lives just two houses down – was trying to back out of her yard when she lost control.
"She said that it seemed like her foot got stuck on the gas and it wouldn’t stop" Carter said. "She was trying to stop it and it wouldn’t stop."
Her truck careened through the grass, over a mailbox and into the house.
"My prayers are really going out to him and his family," Carter said. "You've got to remember, she's coming full-speed up the hill."
Stunned neighbors weren't sure what had just happened.
"Like a loud crash, like a boom," said Greg Newell, describing what another neighbor heard. "He said he thought it was a tornado."
"They said it sounded like a bomb when it hit," Carter said.
Newell says he rushed inside the house to see if the man was okay.
"He was pinned up against the table and the couch," he said. "When I went in, I saw his leg pinned up against it, it had a broken bone coming out of his leg."
Incredibly, witnesses say that broken leg is the homeowner's only injury.
"It could have been worse, that's one thing we can say, it could have been worse," Carter said.
Police haven't released the victim's name.
Carter tells WREG his mother was taken to the hospital to be checked out, and that she's shaken up but okay.
No word yet if any charges will be filed against the driver.
