MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- Residents of one North Memphis neighborhood were startled out of their sleep after gunshots rang out early Monday morning.

Some of the people who live at the corner of Looney and Manassas in North Memphis to WREG's Melissa Moon they think they know who was shot, but aren't sure why.

" Yeah, I heard the shots. It sounded like a whole bunch of them," said one neighbor.

He said the gunfire right outside his door woke him up, but he didn't go outside until police arrived on the scene.

"I didn`t want to look out. I knew nobody I love is going to be out here at 3 in the morning. So, it wasn`t for me to look out here."

The victim told police he had just dropped off mail at a Post Office nearby and decided to drive down Looney on his way home. He said when he stopped at the corner, someone in a silver vehicle began shooting into the driver's side of his car. He then sped away.

The victim reportedly did not live in the neighborhood.
