Memphis Police investigating shootout in East Memphis

MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- Gunfire erupted in the area of Mt. Moriah and Ridgeway Friday night, sending two people to the hospital.

"I love the city, man, but like I said, it's time for a change somewhere, man," said Jazemon Adams. Adams doesn't have words for the violence he keeps hearing about.

"I mean I don't know what to say, the city gotta get it together," he said.

The latest shooting happened right next to the grocery store he goes to.

According to police, officers were helping with traffic control after a basketball game at Ridgeway High. Several officers were already in the area as well because of a possible armed person walking in the school's parking lot.

While they were looking into that call, a shots fired call came over the radio.

Moments later they heard a car horn coming from the fire station next to the high school. A person had showed up there with a gunshot wound.

As officers began their investigation, they realized the shooting happened about a mile from the high school at Ridgeway and Mt. Moriah. Witnesses told police two groups of people were shooting at each other from their vehicles.

Another person showed up to Baptist East Hospital with a gunshot wound, too.

Adams just hopes something can be done to curb the crime.

"It's beyond terrible, so I just hope the city of Memphis can come together for the better. "

Memphis Police said no one is in custody.
