POPE COUNTY, Ark. — Arkansas State Police have been called in to investigate a shooting involving a Pope County deputy.

Just after 3 p.m., Sheriff’s deputies responded to the scene of a disturbance. When they arrived, they confronted an armed man and demanded he put the weapon down.

That’s when the man reportedly moved to cover and opened fire at the deputies.

At least one law enforcement officer shot back, hitting and killing the suspect.

The Pope County Sheriff’s Office immediately asked state police to investigate.

More information is expected Friday.
