MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- He's a character in the kitchen, talking trash and serving up traditional New Orleans dishes.
A native of the Crescent City, Chef Gary Williams and his family moved to Memphis 12 years ago, "It reminds me a bit of New Orleans the culture, the music I call it New Orleans north."
Deja Vu originally opened in a tiny building on Florida, "DeJa Vu is a super hit because of the giving."
The food brought standing room only crowds, and the chef decided he would support the city that was supporting him.
Chef Gary immediately connected with some of the city's largest charities.
He gives time and food to at least a dozen major events a year.
Gary grew up in a family of six raised by a single mom.
He says times were hard but his mother taught him that giving would bless the family, "It wasn't always a lot of money but there was a lot of food and a lot of love, and I saw the way food brought folks together, church suppers, raising money for fund raisers my mom taught us how to give."
Taste around the World benefiting the Heal the Hood Foundation is this Saturday at 4 p.m. at the Kroc Center.
