Lawsuit filed against Shelby County Sheriff after computer update cause headaches
MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A class action lawsuit has been filed against Sheriff Bill Oldham stemming from the recent updates to the Shelby County jail and court systems.
According to court documents, Issacca Powell was arrested on November 1 and taken to the jail. After that, he was not notified of the charges against him, allowed to see a judge, or given a court date.
After 11 days in jail, the lawsuit states, the plaintiff was finally set to be released, but was held for an additional two days after paying his bond. Powell said he was finally released after two weeks in jail.
The cause of the “unlawful detention” was the new computer update that caused a back log, the plaintiff’s lawyer claims.
Powell is seeking $10 million from which all class members can claim compensation.
