Family members killed while returning home from band competition

GREENE COUNTY, Ind. – Three members of a family were killed in crash on I-69 early Sunday morning returning from a band competition.

State police said David Rinehart, 46, Ruth Rinehart, 74, Josie Rinehart, 18, and Sophie Rinehart, 17 were traveling southbound when their Honda Civic struck a deer.

The family then pulled to the side of the road according to WXIN-TV.

A short time later, a Chevrolet Colorado pickup truck driven by Mason Hartkey, 19, left the roadway and struck the Rinehart’s vehicle.

David, Ruth and Sophie were all killed during the crash.

Josie suffered cuts and abrasions and was transported to IU Health Bloomington.

Hartkey was also transported to IU Health for a fractured arm.

The Rinehart family was in Indianapolis for the Bands of America National Championship at Lucas Oil Stadium.
